HR CASE STUDY
Sony, the Japan-based multinational
conglomerate, is one of the leading manufacturers of consumer electronics
devices and information technology products. Sony was responsible for
introducing path breaking products like the Walkman, the Discman, and the
PlayStation gaming console, among others. But in the late 1990s, it lost its
leadership position in many product lines in which it was operating. Analysts
attributed this to the silo culture prevailing in the organization. Each of the
departments functioned like different fiefdoms, hardly cooperating with each
other, even when it was necessary. Moreover, Sony's growing complacency led to
its failing to recognize the growing popularity of new technologies and digital
products and the company choosing to stick to its proprietary formats.
Sony was caught off-guard and tried
to revive itself under the guidance of its first non-Japanese head Howard
Stringer, who took over as the CEO in 2005.
For a couple of years, Sony appeared
to be on the path to revival.
However , for the fiscal year ending March
2009, the company reported a loss. Sony's failure to bring out innovative
products in spite of having the required competencies was one of the main
reasons for the company's problems, and analysts attributed it to the existing
culture in the company. In February 2009, with the aim of addressing the issue
of its silo culture, Stringer announced a reorganization that involved changes
in the organization structure. Through this reorganization, he sought to
transform Sony into an innovative and agile company. However, it remains to be
seen whether the reorganization can bring Sony out of its problems.
Issues:
» Examine the
challenges faced by Sony in a competitive global business environment.
» Analyze how Sony can make its products competitive and foster innovation.
» Examine the efficacy of the reorganization program initiated by Stringer in turning around Sony and solving its problem relating to the silo culture.
» Analyze other measures that need to be taken by Stringer to restore profitability of Sony.

BEST MANAGER 29th Jan '11
WILD GOOSE CHASE 2
It was a great saturday afternoon, things were moving very smoothly.... But all of a sudden we see our participants running for no reason... We were all worried if they were into some trouble.!! But later when we asked those participants as to why they were running.....
SCOOBY DOO
Today, I have found the hidden talent in me i.e. Patience. I always used to think that I will lose patience if somebody is not convinced with my effort; but today hidden talent came out of me due to BEST MANGER tele-marketing round. First of all, I am very thankful to the organisers who put this telemarketing round in this event. The round started by taking phone number of a customer whom I had to call and convince him to buy the product and the product I was going to sell him was lux soap. I became very happy because the customer whom I had called, listened to me patiently and told that he would call me later. But he didn’t call me.So at last I called him but he didn’t respond to my call.Continuously I made 16 calls but it went in vain .Eventhough I called him 17th time, this time it was picked up but the customer replied that he didn’t like the product without using . I convince him that he couldn’t say like that without experiencing the product. Suddenly, he rejected the call in the middle of the conversation .I couldn’t understand why he did so and started calling him once again. The call was responded in the third attempt and I enthusiastically explained him about the benefit as well as offer regarding the product. Once again the call was rejected in the middle of the conversation. This time I tried once again but the mobile turned out to be switch off. Even though I controlled my patience and tried again. Atlast the call was responded and the customer asked me to meet him in different places one by one but I was not able to find him at any of his mentioned place. Actually the customer was not there in the campus, he had already gone to his home. When the organiser came to know the whole matter he apologized for the misbehaviour of customer. Organiser praised for my patience. Eventhough I had to make a lot of unnecessary efforts I felt happy at the end because of word of praise by the organiser for my patience.
PICKACHU
Hi this is Pikachu the participant of 'Best Manger'!. As a part of the event we had several rounds! The best round was 'Telemarketing'! This is a round in which we, the participants are supposed to sell a product to a customer whose contact no is given to us. It sounds so simple! But we had few conditions to follow. Firstly, time limit:- 20 min was given. Secondly, we have to sell the product 3 times the original price.
It was my turn then! I choose a product 'VASELINE'. I just made a call to my customer and spoke, he was not interested in my product, so he told call back after 2 min. After sometimes i made a call , I told him about the product and tried to convince him. I told, I can even show him a demonstration of the product. So he asked me to meet personally. My trouble started from here!. First he asked me to come near college ground. I went there and called him, he told I'm near main gate! I went there running because i had time limit. He was not there too! Again he told me to come to a particular class. At-last I found him! And my customer was 'KUNAL'!! I spoke to him personally about the product and tried to convince him. But I failed.
After the event is over, KUNAL told me about my performance. He told me a superb statement of marketing, 'YOU ARE A SUCCESSFUL SALESMEN, IF YOU CAN SELL 2 COLOR TELEVISION TO A BLIND'. This is something which i learnt for the first time. Anyway it was a wonderful round!. Thanks to the organizers!.

MOJO JOJO
today our task for the best manager was tele marketing.. we had to convince the customer to buy the product on phone which was a challengin one.. had gr8 fun doin it.. it was not a easy task , the customer made me run everywhere and i had to do it without loosin patience.. had to make sure tat im not wastin the customers time , had to convince ma customer to buy ma product which was overpriced which was hell lot of a task.. i learned lots frm this task, firstly u gotta hav lots of patience and should not loose ur cool.. even though the customer tries to make fun abt u or the product , all u gotta do is remain calm and hav a fake smile on ur face and try to make the customer buy the product.. well overall i felt this was one of the most challengin task.. had a gr8 learnin experience .. learnt ma mistakes .. the co ordinators of the event hav done a gr8 job..
PURPLE PANDA
Today we had the tele marketing task.. As i had been before for best manager and knew that there would be a selling round but did not expect the task put up by the organiser's. I am very glad they came up with something innovative with teh concept of tele marketing... As i had worked before in a call center as a invoice process person i knew how to talk with customers and how to convince them.. So started my task with calling the number allocated to me..the product i had to sell was "lux" soap. It was a very interesting task as the customer i was been allocated turned out to be a man. He was very sure that he will not buy the product as it was women's product... but some how after calling him 3 times he was ready to spare some time and talk to me..the customer whom i spoke to was Mr.Faiz.. He was doing what usually customers do and we had a time constraint and had to sell of the product to the customer in the allocated time that was 30 minutes. It was fun with the pressure building up i also for a change felt the pressure. So teh customer called me to Belandur at first then to Sarjapur and then said he was in the college campus.then when i reached the campus i spoke to him and he was drecting me where to come and then suddenly got angry due to my excessive calls i guess and switched off his phone then the organiser's helped me to get to him and then he was still not convinced with my product.. He was sure i knew to sell but did not want my product but some how with my convincing skills and quick thinking i came up with a solution so as to give him an addtional offer with the soap it self so came up with the idea to introduce a early bird offer and lucky draw offer.he was impressed and yet made me sit down and explain the benifits and told me he was using a product recommended by teh doctor but some how managed to convince him to by my product after pursuading him he finally agreed to but my product but i persoanlly feel i had got the toughest kind of customer one can ever ask for... But on the whole enjoyed teh whole experience and will want to thank the organiser's for putting up a great show and making this best manager a grand success and also the tele marketing round and would appreciate if more participants come and become a part of our NHC BBM management team...

The very first day was so exciting and fun... All our participants tried putting thier maximum efforts to stick on to the race.... And the best part was our participants were cheered for their crazy names like MOJO JOJO, PINKY BRAIN, SHAGGY, PIKACHU, SCOOBY DOO, and so on.... The STAR of the day was DARSHAN ( 4th sem, Global ) who put the whole mob into laughter after a long hour of role play... Our participants exhibitted their tallents in coming up with awesme ideas for their CREATIVE RESUMES, and it was more like a WILD GOOSE CHASE for all of them because half an hour's time was all they had got to qualify in this round...!!

BEST MANAGER
CASE STUDY OVERNIGHT TASK
BURNOUT
When Mahesh joined XYZ Bank (private sector) in 1985, he had one clear goal- to prove his mettle. He did prove himself and has been promoted five times since his entry into the bank. Compared to others, his progress has been the fastest. Currently, his job demands that Mahesh should work 10 hours a day with practically no holidays. At least two day in a week, Mahesh is required to travel.
Peers and subordinates at the bank has appreciation for Mahesh. They don’t grudge the ascension achieved by Mahesh, though there are some who wish they too had been promoted as well.
The post of general manager fell vacant. One should work as GM for a couple of years if he were to climb up to the top of the ladder. Mahesh applied for the post along with others in the bank. The chairman assured Mahesh that the post would be his.
A sudden development took place which almost wrecked Mahesh’s chances. The bank has the practice of subjecting all its executives to medical check up once in a year. The medical reports go straight to the chairman who would initiate remedials where necessary. Thought Mahesh was only 35, he too, was required to undergo the test.
The chairman of the bank received a copy of Mahesh’s physical examination results, along with a note from the doctor. The note explained that Mahesh was seriously overworked, and recommended that he be given an immediate four-week vacation. The doctor also recommended that Mahesh’s workload must be reduced and he must take to physical exercise everyday. The note warned that if Mahesh did not care for advice, he would be in heart trouble in another six months.
After reading the doctor’s note, the chairman sat back in his chair, and started brooding over. Three issues were uppermost in his mind- (i) How would Mahesh take this news? (ii)How many others do have similar fitness problems? (iii)Since the environment in the bank helps create the problem, what could he do to alleviate it ? The idea of holding a stress-management programme flashed in his mind and suddenly he instructed his secretary to set up a meeting with the doctor and some key staff members, at the earliest.
QUESTIONS
1. If the news was broken out to Mahesh, how would he react ?
2. If you were giving advice to the chairman on this matter, what would you recommend ?
REQUIRMENTS
1. One soft copy
2. Two hard copies
3. Report has to be submitted on 27/1/2011 by 9.15am.
